How to choose lighting for your home

A welcoming room needs more than one bright ceiling light. Start with the moments you want to make room for: a book after dinner, a conversation around the table or a softer light at the end of the day.

Give each light a role.

Think in three layers. Ambient light provides the room’s general illumination. Task light puts light where an activity happens, such as a desk or reading chair. Accent light draws attention to a favourite object or architectural detail.

In a living room, that might mean an overhead fitting, a lamp beside the sofa and a small point of light on a sideboard. Choose a task lamp for its useful light and placement; choose a decorative lamp for the atmosphere and shape it contributes. One fitting may serve more than one purpose, but it helps to decide which job matters most.

Brightness and light colour are different choices.

Lumens (lm) describe light output; watts (W) describe power consumption. Compare lumens when brightness is your priority. Wattage alone cannot tell you how bright two different LED products will appear.

Colour temperature is measured in kelvin (K). Around 2700–3000K gives a warmer appearance, while higher values look cooler. For a relaxed living area, warm light is a useful starting point; for a workspace, compare the light colour with your existing lighting and personal preference. Colour temperature does not tell you brightness.

Check the actual variant you are ordering. A photograph of a warm, glowing room does not prove that every colour option has the same effect.

Choose the scale before the finish.

Measure the clear surface on your bedside table or console. Leave room for the things that belong there: a glass, a book or a charging phone. Then compare the lamp’s stated width and height with the furniture around it. A product photographed alone can look larger or smaller than it is.

Try a paper outline on the tabletop before ordering. Look at it from your normal seated position and from the doorway. Once the proportions work, choose a finish that relates to another detail in the room, such as a handle, picture frame or table leg.

A closer look: KML123.

The K2 KML123 pairs a gold finish with a fluted clear shade. Its listed dimensions are 120 × 223 mm, making it a useful model to measure against a small side table or bedside surface.

The product listing specifies rechargeable operation, USB Type-C charging, touch dimming and 3000K, 4000K and 6500K light settings. Its IP20 rating is for an indoor setting; it is not an outdoor lamp. These are details of the KML123, rather than features to assume across every table lamp.

A short checklist before you order.

  • Setting: a room, a task or a decorative corner?
  • Fit: dimensions, usable surface and the position of the controls.
  • Light: listed output, light colour and any dimming options.
  • Power: rechargeable or mains-powered, with the correct charging or connection requirements.
  • Compatibility: for replaceable bulbs, check the socket, voltage and permitted lamp size; for dimming, check the lamp and control are compatible.

Browse table lamps for an easy starting point, or compare wall lights when you want to keep the tabletop clear. For a fixed electrical installation, have the fitting and location checked by a qualified installer.
